Gourd Art

Made while on retreat with Bonnie Gibson as teacher
Most people think of pumpkins when they think of gourds, although related they are very different. I use hard shell gourds (Lagenaria siceraria) that are grown in Eastern Canada and Arizona.
Hard shell gourds come in all shapes and sizes and can be carved, wood burned and or painted just as you would a beautiful piece of wood. The hard-shelled gourds have been used since ancient times, many found in Egypt, China and Africa. Many hard shelled gourds are named after their usage such as dipper gourd, spoon gourd, bottle gourd, basket gourd, and the birdhouse gourd. Many cultures make musical instruments from gourds. Contact me if interested in my gourd art pieces for sale.

There is an old legend that says
If you give or receive a gourd...
with it goes all the best in life...
health, happiness and other good things.
